Summer is almost over, but things are just getting warmed up at RPCVLA!
RPCVLA has been holding many social events this summer: from TGIS, Theater Al Fresco at Griffith Park, and World Music Night at the Hollywood Bowl. We’ve also been featured at the PCV Nominee and Invitee Send-off Party, where fellow Board members, Dina Navar, Leigh Stenberg, and yours truly, shared lessons learned as part of a panel series. We’re also very proud to have donated over $1,000 to PC projects via our Yamanaka Fund!
And last, but not least, we welcomed a new addition to our Board:
Jenna Houts is our new Marketing Coordinator and put together this awesome newsletter before you!
Oh, and come join us! We are planning an amazing International Annual Dinner this year, set for Saturday, Nov. 9 in Pasadena, California. You don’t want to miss out on this yearly event that brings RPCVs and PC Invitees together, enjoying a potluck dinner, being entertained by music artists, and honoring a Local Hero!
RPCVLA Care Package Project
The RPCVLA Care Package Project aims to send a well-timed packages to PCVs who may be at a frustrating point in their service. These packages will not necessarily be delivered during the holidays, but rather will be sent to PCVs during a time when they need some cheer. If you would like to contribute, please fill out this form.
Call for photos!
Do you have an amazing photo from your service you would love to share with the members of RPCVLA? We will be highlighting one photo from an RPCVLA member’s service in every newsletter. Send your submission to firstname.lastname@example.org.
To get things started, as your new RPCVLA Marketing Director, I am highlighting my favorite photo from my service (Paraguay 2009-2011). This picture is of me and my fiancee hosting a special camp for the kids in the my community during their winter break from school. Our Australian friend was visiting and to honor the occasion the kids learned all about Australia and made masks of their favorite Aussie animals!

Yamanaka Fund Recipient
The Yamanaka Fund is RPCVLA’s small grant fund makes small cash grants to community projects in countries where Peace Corps Volunteers are assigned. Our latest recipient is serving is PCV Nathan Arnold, an Environmental Health Volunteer, from Pasadena, CA. serving in Panama.
Nathan’s project will provide latrines for a community that is forced to use the river or the surrounding forest. The latrines will be built out of light materials so it can be lifted off one pit once it is full and reused. The filled pit will be topped with soil and planted with a fruit a tree. This will help address the deforestation problem in the area.
RPCVLA granted $400 to fund supplies for Nathan’s project. Good luck Nathan!
