We’ve got pictures and a synopsis of the Model UN Camp we funded this past summer!
Camp Model United Nations
Ukrainian Organization: National Organization of Ukrainian Scouts – Odessa
Directed by Julie Daniels, Natalie Gmitro and Lukas Henke.
The first ever Peace Corps MUN in Ukraine and first time to merge the summer camp and Model UN format. Camp Model UN is a week-long summer camp for Ukrainian youth to conduct a United Nations simulation. 52 Ukrainian youth represented 20 different countries, excluding Ukraine and had to debate and discuss issues based upon that countries’ point of view not on their own personal point of view. The simulation was conducted in English; however, directions and information was distributed in both Ukrainian and English. The simulation greatly strengthened the youth’s critical thinking skills, public speaking skills and awareness about their role in global society.
They discussed and researched the issues of refugee migration, counter human trafficking and food security. They were then given a crisis simulation, where they had to create UN resolutions to solve a drought and refugee issue in Northern Iraq. Then they chose to work on the issue of food security. All in all they wrote and passed six resolutions, which were written in English.
They used parliamentary procedure and learned how to make motions and use points of privilege and debate.
They also received training on corruption, arms trafficking, counter human trafficking and women’s education worldwide.
All in all the camp was a huge success and many youth said that it was the hardest thing that they had ever done, but they loved it in the end.
Thanks again for all your help!
