01_Experiment_Begins.jpg
01 Experiment Begins7 viewsSo this is one of the cookers assembled based on the instructions from the woman in Oaxaca at http://www.solarcooking.org/plans/windshield-cooker.htm. It's a windshield sunscreen held together with velcro and seated in a bucket. A grill goes inside the funnel.

00 Instructions from www.solarcooking.org/plans/windshield-cooker.htm6 viewsFound Instructions for a solar cooker made from a sunscreen for a windshield at http://www.solarcooking.org/plans/windshield-cooker.htm. Woman in Oaxaca claimed it was the most effective design she'd worked with, and that it was portable too.

02 Wow! Almost 250 Degrees Within Minutes!6 viewsVery cool -- you could see the thermometer rising as this thing warmed up. It was about 11 AM on a warm April day -- perhaps 80 degrees outside. This thing climed to 250 degrees quickly and kept going.
03_Hot_Dogs_Cooking.jpg
03 Hot Dogs in the Solar Cooker6 viewsSo an easy thing to try first was hot dogs. How bad could they turn out? They are precooked, after all . . .
04__Hot_Dogs_Really_Cooking.jpg
04 The Hot Dogs Are Really Cooking!7 viewsSo as you can see these dogs started steaming up and cooking pretty well . . .
05_Climbing_to_300_Degrees_--_Wow.jpg
05 Climbing to 300 Degrees . . . Wow!4 viewsThis thing went to 300 degrees! It utlimately climbed to a little more than that, though 350 degrees didn't happen (might get there with some modifications . . . ) -- not bad for a cooker that cost a total of under fifteen bucks . . .
06_It_Worked.jpg
06 It Worked!5 viewsSo it cooked the dogs like a BBQ. We should try this at our beach party this year. The dogs tasted great -- definitely better than a microwave, more like BBQ dogs. The plastic bag kept in the moisture so they were very juicy. Yeah, this rocked.
07__But_Can_It_Do_Lean_Cuisine.jpg
07 But Can It Do Lean Cuisine?5 viewsBut these days the thing has to cook a TV dinner to prove its salt. So . . . whether the solar cooker can do Lean Cuisne?
08__Trying_Lean_Cuisine.jpg
08 Trying Lean Cuisine5 viewsHere goes . . .
09__Really_Cookin.jpg
09 Really Cookin'!5 viewsOK, this was rad! This Lean Cuisine was really cooking! It came out of the freezer but it still managed to do the job . . .
10__It_Totally_Worked.jpg
10 It totally did the Lean Cuisine4 viewsVery tasty . . . Not as fast as the microwave, but worked well, and with no electricity. . .
11__Sci_Fi_Driveway_2_Ovens.jpg
11 It's a sci-fi driveway! (Note - there are more pics -- click on "2 of 2" in the pink bar below right)5 viewsAdded some reflective boxes above the cookers to catch more rays -- seems to have helped drive up the temp some -- and taped the cookers to a garage door to keep them more stable, after one tipped over in wind. The propping up worked fine. So . . . are we cooking or contacting aliens here?
