Peace Corps L.A. is seeking volunteers who would like to help build raised garden beds and to conduct weeding and mulching. In addition to lending a helping hand, this is also a good opportunity to meet other applicants and former volunteers. The L.A. Conservation Corps, whose mission is to provide education and work opportunities for at-risk young adults, will be directing our efforts. This time we will be working on a brand-new community garden in Lincoln Heights, a neighborhood which sits on the bluffs of the L.A. River and is generally considered the oldest in Los Angeles.

Description:
Some countries are known for their flavorful cuisine, exotic spices, and delectable dishes. The tiny country of Costa Rica is internationally recognized instead for eco-tourism and having more teachers than police. Why, you may ask yourself, should you plan on driving all the way to the San Fernando Valley to experience Las Delicias, the only authentic ethnic Costa Rican restaurant in Los Angeles ? For Salsa Lizano! Anyone who has visited Costa Rica has been pleasantly surprised by this savory mild bottled condiment, especially when used on Gallo Pinto! Makes me homesick just typing this! If you’d like to enjoy this unique flavor, which is difficult to purchase in the USA , come and join us for our next TGIS scheduled for Saturday, June 19 at 7:00pm.
Las Delicias Restaurant is conveniently located off I-405, exit Sherman Way, in Van Nuys, CA 91406, next to Starbucks in a mini-mall at 15355 Sherman Ways, just before Sepulveda Blvd. (Tel: 818/988-8323)
Their menu contains many vegetables cooked Tica-style (e.g. yucca, fried plantains, chorreadas de elote with Natilla , and refried black beans), casados, grilled fish, pork, chicken, and bistek (beef), and of course, gallo pinto and cheese dishes. Check out their website: www.deliciasrestaurants.com. Customers order at the counter and your food and drinks will be brought to your table on a banana leafed platter. A notebook of photos of each dish is available for those unfamiliar with Costa Rican food.
See you there! Hosted by Costa Rican RPCVs Raquel Korn (San Vito) & Lindy Lindeman (Turrialba).
